Without request from their users they designed a replacement for the browser-based navigation that we've all used in our file managers since the days of Windows 98.

The GNOME developers thought this was stupid. They dreamed up a dozen reasons why it was stupid, typed it up, and created what they called "the spatial way."

Here is the spatial way . You may recognize it from Windows 95 and 3.1 , when opening a folder opened a new window. Opening a folder ten levels deep opened ten windows. Despite the historical evidence, the GNOME developers claimed their implementation was substantially different; worse, the attitude at the time was that everyone who didn't like it was wrong. There was a preference in GConf to disable their brilliant new feature, but asking GNOME apologists about it on forums got you flamed. The developers' attitude at the time was that you'd only be able to use "spatial" in the future. Browser-based navigation was deprecated.

There was a *huge* backlash and the GNOME developers got increasingly upset that everyone was so bad at using computers. Every popular distro quickly adopted the "legacy" method. To my knowledge no popular distro uses "the spatial way."
